HOUR ONE PLAY HARD: Jason Spiess and Sterling talk about several technical difficulties that happened at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference and how it has impacted the rest of the week.
Jason, who has interviewed well over 1,000 people, shares stories about the Ghost in the Machine with a Lutheran pastor and a colleague. Now, there are several Ghosts from the WBPC, which Jason isn’t so sure it wasn’t human error.
Jason and Sterling are joined by John Lilse, S&B Helical, talks about why he is moving down to Houston to work the Gulf and Permian due to market demands.
The phone interview starts out with the three discussing how it took several months to make this interview happen. It was scheduled the day after Opening Day in baseball to talk about the number of oil and gas promotional advertisements at the Houston Astros Home Opener.

The Play Hard segment of The Crude Life Morning Show revisits the ESG movement several times. From the fact the John Lisle didn’t know much about it because he’s been working 90-hour weeks trying to keep up with the new marketplace to how the same people who got the industry into the Climate Change mess are now getting money to educate and teach industry on ESG. Sterling points out how this is an excellent example of “bureaucracy funding Bureaucracy”.

Holliday was in Bismarck for a speaking gig at a Landman’s Convention and happen to stop by the WBPC. This impromptu interview turned into an organic discussion on ESG.
The two talk about how industry was already going ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and how there are those within industry leadership creating issues connecting with the people.
Flaring, public relations, emotional responses and technology are several threads of conversaation throughout the interview.
Holliday says more states should look to North Dakota on how to regulate and integrate technology. Spiess says industry should look at embracing the positives on industry and show the world why they are the leaders in the environmental movement.

The interview also dives into the question of whether state’s and organizations’ oil and gas leadership is afraid of the American Petroleum Institute.
Prior to founding Holliday Energy Law Group, Ben entered the oil and gas industry as a landman in South Texas before moving in-house to join the Barnett Shale Asset Team of a Midland-based E&P. With the decline of the Barnett and the rise of the Eagle Ford, Ben became the project leader in charge of an approximate 30,000 acre Eagle Ford asset in Karnes and Atascosa Counties, leading all title, leasing, and curative efforts within the prospect area. Since 2010, Ben has focused on representing exploration and production companies in their operations across the United States.
Ben is Board Certified in Oil, Gas, and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is a member of the State Bar College, is the Immediate Past President of the San Antonio Association of Professional Landmen, is a founding board member of South Texas Landman & Lawyer Clays, and is the current Sponsorship Chair and Immediate Past President for the San Antonio Chapter of Entrepreneur’s Organization.
