In HOUR TWO we WORK HARD with our Newsmaker Interview: U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer and U.S. Senator John Hoeven
U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) joined Evening Edit with Liz MacDonald on Fox Business, where he reacted to the Washington Post issuing a correction regarding its reporting on former President Trump and the Georgia election results. Senator Cramer also discussed reopening the economy and President Biden looking at raising taxes. Excerpts and a link to the full video are below.
On the Washington Post:
“Good for the Washington Post, but it’s awfully late. The problem is they should avoid these mistakes in the first place by doing a little bit of investigative reporting, but the Washington Post has become famous in this town for jumping first before they do the background checks and research. … The Washington Post, New York Times, and others were largely embarrassed by Donald Trump getting elected, and they seem to spend four years trying to undo it or delegitimize it. This was just one more time when they took a leap without checking out the facts, and Donald Trump was proven right again. So shame on the Washington Post for doing it in the first place, but at least they did print the retraction.”
On Reinstating Lockdowns:
“I agree with [Florida] Governor [Ron] DeSantis. Quite honestly, I am perplexed by this Administration’s desire to keep this pandemic going. We spent the last year plus trying to get rid of the pandemic, but these guys seem to be elongating it. … [Florida] Governor DeSantis knows far better than anybody in Washington, D.C. whether Florida is ready to be open, and I trust his judgment.”
On the Economy:
“If [President Biden] does nothing and let governors reopen, he’s going to have six-plus Gross Domestic Product growth over the course of the next year. I don’t know why he would want to ruin all of that with higher taxes and more shut downs. I am astounded by the notion that somehow one person in Washington D.C. taking advice from one other person in Washington, D.C. knows what is good for the economy state-by-state. It’s like they forgot the United States is 50 sovereign states and the federal government is a creation of them, not the other way around.”
“This lockdown mindset in Washington, D.C. should not be spread throughout the rest of the country. Hopefully the rest of the country can have a greater influence on the affairs of Washington, D.C. ”
Senator John Hoeven helped introduce the Storing CO2 and Lowering Emissions Act (SCALE) Act, bipartisan, bicameral legislation to advance the construction of the infrastructure needed to implement carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies. Among other efforts, the bill, which is sponsored by Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.), would:
-
Establish the
CO2Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (CIFIA) program to provide:
- Flexible, low-interest loans for CO2transport infrastructure projects.
- Grants for excess capacity on new infrastructure to facilitate future growth.
- The bill also includes grants for Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies for CO2transport infrastructure.
- Build on the existing CarbonSAFE program to provide cost-sharing for commercial-scale saline geologic CO2storage projects.
-
Provide grants for
states to establish their own permitting programs for Class VI wells, which are used for geologic or long-term
CO2storage.
- This aligns with Hoeven’s successful efforts to secure EPA approval for North Dakota to be the primary regulator over Class VI wells, the first such approval in the nation.
“For more than a decade, North Dakota has been working to crack the code on CCUS technology,” said Hoeven. “That means not only proving that CCUS works in the lab, but also providing the right legal, tax and regulatory environment to support its implementation. Our legislation addresses a key aspect of this effort – building the pipeline infrastructure we need to transport and store captured CO2 emissions in the appropriate geologic formations. This is about investing in new technologies and helping bring them to scale so they will be commercially-viable over the long-term. That’s how we will empower America to continue utilizing all of its abundant energy resources, helping to ensure our national and economic security.”
In addition to Hoeven, Coons and Cassidy, the SCALE Act is cosponsored by Senators Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.). A companion to the legislation has also been introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressmen Marc Veasey (D-Texas) and David McKinley (R-W.Va.).
