HOUR ONE PLAY HARD: Jason Spiess sits down with a graduating Mystician Editor-in-Chief Robert Mechaley III. Robert met Jason in front of the Bismarck Civic Center at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference for an interview on how the oil and gas industry is connecting with the youth.
Robert gives an overview of the media productions resources and the Mass Communications departments at Bismarck State College. He also explains his role at the newspaper, radio station, television station and new media.
In the second part of the Play Hard segment, Junior Urias of Up In Smoke BBQ joins Jason (interview from June 14, 2017). The National Pitmaster BBQ Champion tells the story of how he won the Destination America Channel’s Pitmaster Championship and was heckled a bit by BBQ icon Myron Mixon.
Urias shares how his experience on BBQ Pitmasters program taught him to appreciate the oil and gas industry and it’s ingenuity. Like the time he was on a national televised show cooking a $500 steak on a $20 grill.
Urias also talks about how he went to BBQ camp as a child to learn his craft.

In HOUR TWO we WORK HARD with our Newsmaker Interview: Dustin Gawrylow, President, North Dakota Watchdog Network
Gawrylow joins Jason at the hotel after hours in conclusion to the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference in Bismarck, ND.
The interview starts off by talking about the local politics and how the state is shaped politically. Controlled by Republicans, Gawrylow talks about how there are factions, i.e. RINOs, within the ND GOP, and how the in-party fighting is creating more problems than solutions in the oil and gas industry.
Gawrylow explains how taxpayers are now going to be asked to not only prop up coal, but also pay for the transition into energy sources that will make coal obsolete.
He also opines about how apparently, Governor Doug Burgum has his own Green New Deal. Gawrylow also recaps how his fighting against Cap and Trade back in the day has brought him almost full circle in some regards.
The two also talk about media ethics, subsidy responsibility and how the light switch has replaced the petroleum industry in the same way the grocery store replaced the farmer.
