Tiffany Steiner and Jackie Jenkin, Co-Founders of the Bakken BBQ, announce the amount of money raised from this year’s community fundraiser. In the midst of a year where COVID Shutdowns, Smart Starts, and Mask Wars were dominating the country’s discourse, the 8th Annual Bakken BBQ raised $75,000 for Make A Wish North Dakota.
“Last year we had double the companies cooking and double the attendance, so that just shows how much our community stepped up and supported us with sponsorships and donations that really changed how we were able to give back this to Make-A-Wish this year,” Steiner said.
The Bakken BBQ traditionally takes place in June, however, due to COVID, the event was pushed back to August. Additional health and safety measures were taken and no outbreaks were recorded nor contact tracing for quarantine.
“We made sure we had all our ducks in a row,” Jenkin said. “We wanted to make sure we had this event, but also make everyone safe so we contacted Southwest Health District, North Dakota Department of Health to make sure we met all the requirements.”
The 9th Annual Bakken BBQ is already scheduled and they are moving it back to June.
“Our 9th Annual Bakken BBQ is scheduled for June 18, 2021,” Jenkins said. “If anyone wants to get involved whether it is volunteering, cooking or sponsoring, they can email us and we can get them the information,” Jenkins said. “We are very excited for next year because our theme is in appreciation First Responders.”

The Bakken BBQ was created in 2013 as a collaborative effort for industry and community to raise money to help groups and organizations who provide solutions to a local problems. The goal for the Bakken BBQ is to bring the community together by creating a family-friendly event and raising money to help make a difference in the community.
Make-A-Wish America was founded in 1980 when Chris Greicius, a 7-year-old boy from Phoenix Arizona with leukemia, had a heartfelt wish of becoming a police officer. A group of officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety granted his wish by giving him a custom-made uniform, helmet, badge and a helicopter ride. The young boy’s delight in having his wish granted inspired the group to form the organization, which would grant the special wishes of other children. The organization has now grown to 65 chapters in the United States and granted over 250,000 wishes to very deserving children.
