Post Election Thoughts, Annual Meetings and the Marcellus' First Frac

Joe Sinnott, CEO, Witting Partners and the host of the Energy Detox Podcast gives his post election thoughts on how President-elect Donald Trump will impact the energy sector, how to manage change in an organization while the day-to-day operations have to continue and his attendance at an event that celebrated the first successful hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operation in the Marcellus Shale play that took place in 2006.

“Well, I probably speak for most Pennsylvanians when I say that I’m happy not to have about 20 text messages a day and phone calls and mailbox half filled with flyers,” Sinnott joked to start off the podcast.

When asked about how he felt the election went from a person living in Pennsylvania, amongst their diversity of energy and politics, Sinnott segwayed into an anecdote that summed up his election thoughts.

“Jason, I actually just had this conversation last night, and I was retelling a question that I had asked of a CEO who had moved here from California, and I asked him, I said, Hey, you know he was here about a year, I think, at the time, and I said, Well, what’s your impression of this area? You know. What? What are you surprised by?”

Sinnott continued sharing the story from the executive who recently relocated from California to Pennsylvania.

“He was surprised how really balanced it was from a political standpoint, not just in terms of the numbers of the State,” Sinnott said. “Again, as you said, we are a not just, probably a swing state, but the swing state of all swing States. But basically how, you know, especially here in southwestern Pennsylvania, you know you have the red and the blue, but you’re actually able to get stuff done. You’re not living on the extremes.”

Sinnott continued explaining how the state and industry does try to work together on many issues even if the national media paints a different picture.

The conversation transitioned into public image for energy and how the oil and gas industry has performed over the past decade against the likes of Greta Thunberg and others who have taken on the industry’s public image.

“Yeah, I I think you’re you’re spot on in in several different ways,” Sinnott said. “As an engineer. I know that you need to support your claims with facts and data and sound conclusions, and and all of that. But it needs to start with a story.”

The interview also spent some time discussing the First Frac in the Marcellus.

“My company, Witting Partners, sponsored an event that actually just occurred last night as we record this and that was celebrating the 20th anniversary of Range Resources,” Sinnott said. “Well, that was the the first Marcellus frac here that kicked off the boom, and that was 20 years ago, and so there was an event last night put on by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce here in western Southwestern Pennsylvania.”

Sinnott gives a short recap of the event that celebrated the first successful hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operation in the Marcellus Shale play that took place in 2006.

The first frac in the Marcellus was carried out by Range Resources Corporation in Washington County, Pennsylvania. This marked the beginning of large-scale development in the Marcellus Shale, a region within the Appalachian Basin known for its vast natural gas reserves.

The operation utilized horizontal drilling combined with hydraulic fracturing, a method that involves injecting fluid at high pressure to create fractures in the rock, allowing natural gas to flow more freely.

This pioneering effort demonstrated the economic viability of extracting natural gas from shale formations and sparked a boom in shale gas development across the region, significantly influencing the U.S. energy landscape

“This continues to produce tremendous amounts of gas and providing tremendous amounts of opportunities and jobs for people,” Sinnott said. “And again, like we talked about much earlier in this conversation, bettering human lives, not just here in Pennsylvania, but really throughout the country, and you know, even beyond the borders of the United States.”
