Warren Martin, Kansas Strong, joins The Crude Life to discuss the realities of Energy Poverty.
A philosophy graduate of Texas Tech University, Warren is an author, teacher, minister, artist, quasi-philosopher and speaker known for his unique teaching style. His passion is to inspire & invest in the next generation of leaders.
He currently serves as Executive Director of Kansas Strong for the promotion of the quality of life created by the oil & natural gas industry. Warren has been leading leadership workshops, presenting keynote presentations and consulting with Fortune 500 corporations and non-profit organizations for 22 years.

Energy poverty refers to the lack of access to modern and sustainable energy services, such as electricity and clean cooking facilities. This issue predominantly affects low-income households and communities, especially in developing regions.
Energy poverty can manifest in two main ways:
- Lack of Physical Access: This involves households not being connected to electricity grids or lacking the infrastructure for modern energy services.
- Economic Access: Even when energy services are available, high costs can prevent households from affording sufficient energy for basic needs.
Impact of Energy Poverty
Energy poverty has far-reaching impacts on individuals and communities:
- Health Risks: Without access to clean energy, people often rely on traditional biomass (wood, charcoal) or kerosene for cooking and heating, leading to indoor air pollution. This is a significant health risk, causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
- Economic Barriers: Lack of reliable electricity hampers economic development. It restricts opportunities for education, as students cannot study after dark, and limits the productivity of businesses, which often require power for operations.
- Educational Challenges: Energy poverty limits access to information and educational resources, as students cannot use electronic devices or internet services. This hampers their ability to perform well academically and reduces future job opportunities.
- Quality of Life: Basic household tasks become labor-intensive and time-consuming without modern energy. This includes cooking, heating water, and lighting. The absence of refrigeration affects food security and nutrition .
- Environmental Impact: The use of inefficient and polluting energy sources contributes to environmental degradation and climate change, exacerbating the overall impact on communities already struggling with energy poverty .
Addressing energy poverty requires a multifaceted approach, including infrastructure development, financial assistance, and policies promoting sustainable and affordable energy access.
