Jason Spiess interviews Doug Wiles, City of Bismarck, City Forester, about their Arbor Day celebration that included city events and youth engagement. Wiles ran down their activities and talked about their continues work after Arbor Day with homeschool children.
“Arbor Day in North Dakota falls on the first Friday in May and last week we got to celebrate with a 4th grade class at Liberty Elementary and we honored a local developer for the work that he’s done to improve an increase our urban forestry in Bismarck,” Wiles said. “The kids at Liberty Elementary put on a little production of poems, skits and even a rap to celebrate trees.
The event began with the presentation of Apple Seed Awards for land beautification efforts from last year, as well as to celebrate Bismarck’s 45th year of being labeled a ‘Tree City’ USA. Mayor Steve Bakken attended the celebration and read an Arbor Day Proclamation.
He also talks about the oil and gas industry’s contribution to their city tree programs. He explains how community minded sponsors have partnered together with the City of Bismarck to provide funds for a matching grant to help homeowners plant street trees. This grant offers a direct reimbursement to citizens and businesses who plant trees in the City’s boulevard area adjacent to their property.
“Marathon does contribute to our program, they contribute a couple thousand dollars a year to our tree planting program,” Wiles said. “And that is something the industry can do. All municipalities are looking for creative ways to fund some of their programs.”
