The Crude Life Week In Review Episode 451: Sex Trafficking, Community Empowerment And DistributionNOW’s Grand Opening

The speakers at the DistributionNOW press conference pose for a picture.

Jason Spiess is joined by Midland Mayor Patrick Payton and Odessa Mayor Javier Joven to talk about DistributionNOW’s grand opening in the Permian Basin.  They also have remodeled by adding a lot of square footage in the Bakken too.

The City of Odessa, Texas, Mayor Javier Joven is feeling good these days despite all the economic and energy issues happening across globe. The reason Joven is feeling optimistic is he knows the Permian can become a solution to the global energy problem.

The mayor attended at special ceremony for DistributionNOW, who had a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Celebration at their new facility in Odessa, Texas. The event was well attended with local community members, professional colleagues and special guest dignitaries like Mayor Hoven and also the neighboring city Midland (TX) Mayor Patrick Payton.

“You see the creativity of how you have to survive,” Mayor Joven said. “This regional DistributionNOW warehouse will be the nerve center for the entire Permian basin into New Mexico to resupply the satellite service companies from valves to fittings and other equipment from the oilfield.”

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and National Child Abuse Prevention Month and The Crude Life continues to create awareness for organizations, communities and individuals who are shedding light on this critical issue for humanity.

Ashley Smith and Shawn Forbes join Jason Spiess to talk about Sex Trafficking issues in the oil and gas industry.  The three discuss how this issue is growing in the United States and truckers, oil workers and media professionals can help in a variety of ways – from awareness to education to activism.

Spiess talks with the Mayor of Midland Texas Patrick Payton about one of the fastest growing issues in the United States – sex trafficking.  In his recent episode of his podcast “No Neutral Moments”, he interviews Lisa Bownds—director and founder of Reflections Ministries, an emergency assessment center with aftercare programs for victims of sex trafficking.  Bownds, who was a member of Payton’s church, became “awakened” to the issue of Sex Trafficking through her own personal experiences.

Patrick and Lisa dive deep into the issue, so much his podcast cites a “disclaimer for sensitive material”.

“The thing that is alarming is you hear the word sex trafficking and your mind cannot comprehend how extensive it is,” Payton said. “It’s a $150B industry in the United States. Most children are groomed into sex trafficking before they are 17-years-old. It’s 12 or 13, it’s 8 or 9, these are hard things to hear but they are trafficked 30-to-40 times a day.”

Mayor Payton believes this is one area the industry can become very helpful and proactive like adding warning signs to safety classes and training curriculums.

“There’s a wake up happening towards this issue here in the Permian Basin. The average predator is an average white man 50-year-old,” Payton said. “We have to wake up to this, we have to make sure our industry wakes up to it and we have to make sure that at man camps and other places where they do safety meetings they are talking about more than the safety of wearing a hard hat but the safety of your sexuality and what is happening around you.”
