Wyoming is all in when it comes to energy. All The Above and all forms too. Even if the Governor doesn’t agree with everything politically, he is savvy enough to understand all energy has a purpose and sometimes the road to development can become a bit bumpy.
However, your bumpy road should not be turned to a rocky road by your own. In this exclusive podcast with The Crude Life, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon talks to Jason Spiess about how Wyoming is involved and can be even more with the global energy solution. Especially since Russia invaded the Ukraine a month ago.
“The point shouldn’t be lost on anyone right now that here in this country we do a better job, safer job and a more environmental job of producing oil and gas than anywhere else in the world and that’s the irony when the world is needing oil to be able to keep Europe going to be able to fight off this Russian invasion we are seeing in the Ukraine that this administration is out asking adversaries, places like Venezuela for good heavens,” Gordon said. “That’s one of the toughest places to produce and they do not have a very good environmental record.”
Gordon explains how the oil and gas industry has been growing over the past decade, with a couple dips, and is looking very promising for many companies. He also comments on the realities of coal.
“One of the most prevalent sources of energy is coal and we can burn that in a better way and more a technological efficient way,” Gordon said. “Wyoming has done a lot with Carbon Capture and Sequestration and we continue to work on that.”
The Governor discussed Uranium, which Wyoming is one of the largest producers in the nation, and how the state needs to get it back up and running, especially in light of the recent world and geopolitical events.
“Finally America is coming to grips with the fact that we’ve surrendered a lot of our own development of these minerals to countries like China for their rare earth and critical minerals and Russia,” Gordon said. “In Wyoming here we just passed a budget and part of that is going to be is looking at what opportunities we can see for critical minerals, rare earth minerals, which would include more uranium, and that would really allow us to build up more rare earth and critical mining in the state.”
Spiess asked about wind energy and the governor cited the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project, a 3,000 MW wind farm being constructed by Power Company of Wyoming in Carbon County.
“We will be home to the second largest wind farm in the world,” Gordon said.
The EIA said that power plant operators expect to add 85 GW of total new generating capacity from 2022 to 2023 with solar and battery storage projects accounting for about 60% of that new capacity. 41 GW of utility scale solar is expected to be added over the next two years, plus 10 GW of battery storage capacity. The EIA says that 16 GW of natural gas capacity and 15 GW of wind capacity can be expected.
Gordon also mentioned that Wyoming has started working with several other “western states toward building out a hydrogen hub”. The coalition of states is competing to receive some of the $8 billion in the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act allocated toward four or more regional hydrogen hubs.
Host Jason Spiess backed Governor Gordon into a corner early on when they began talking about the Energy Exposition & Symposium June 22 – June 23 in Gillette. Spiess explained he was just in a planning meeting for the Energy Exposition and they went over the ESG Round Table and would invite someone from the government to discuss their interpretation of ESG.
The Energy Exposition has educated tens of thousands of people in Gillette, Wyoming; Billings, Montana, and Loveland, Colorado, over the last 20 years on procedures, technology, safety, environmental practices, and equipment used in the oil and gas industry. Our doors have always been open to industry and non-industry attendees.
Exhibitors and Symposiasts represent a wide range of services, including but not limited to, exploration, production, downstream, and all phases of support to the oil and gas industry.
Members from the wind, solar, and other energy companies also join in the energy engagement.
