Earthquake in Oklahoma Halts Oil And Gas Activity

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission’s Induced Seismicity Department directed three Arbuckle oil and gas wastewater disposal wells to shut down and restricted production at other wells following Monday morning’s 4.5-magnitude earthquake.

Around 11:10 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a large earthquake in northern Oklahoma, about 4.5 miles northwest of Medford. According to U.S. Geological Survey and social media posts, the quake was felt in the town of Enid and as far south as Oklahoma City and as east as Bixby.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission investigated the quake and ordered three Arbuckle oil and gas wastewater disposal wells within 6 miles of the earthquake’s epicenter to shut down. Authorities said other Arbuckle disposal wells within 10 miles of the epicenter will be restricted to an average volume of 500 barrels a day.

A news release did not specify how long the Oklahoma Corporation Commission’s orders will be in place but The Crude Life is has been in contact with the OCC offices.

The Arbuckle formation is Oklahoma’s deepest formation.

Texas has recently seen, and felt, it’s earthquake issues too.  On Monday, Texas Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright published a letter addressing the public regarding the increase in earthquakes in the Permian Basin. In it, he reiterated facts about the benefits of recycling water and also said the RRC is working with companies to expedite the approval of additional shallow disposal wells, which are less likely to induce seismic activity. RRC Commissioner Wright’s letter can be found here.

Multimedia Journalist Jason Spiess interviewed Don Blakeman, National Earthquake Information Center and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), who gave an overview of the 4.5 earthquake registered just north of Stanton, Texas. Midland (TX), which is considered the epicenter of oil and gas activity in the United States, is located about 15 miles southwest of where the quake occurred. The earthquake took place at 7:55 p.m. CT and reached a depth of 4.8 miles, according to the USGS. It is tied for the second strongest quake in West Texas in the last decade, according to the USGS. The interview can be found here.
