Todd Garland, CEO, Great American Mining company is one of those “smart clever capitalists” who has cracked multiple codes to figure out ways to mine bitcoin across Shale Play USA. Garland joins Jason Spiess for an update on their goal to mine a solution for emission management while generating value through digital currency.
Garland talks about the major advancements in acceptance for this non-traditional revenue source, but also is quick to point out growing pains are still noticed and educational awareness is still needed.
“I think one of the challenges has been that traditionally producers outsource the collection and monetization of byproducts, so like for example NGLs,” Garland said. “I think many of them look at this being similar.”
Still, more operators are opening up their mind up to Bitcoin mining and how they can benefit from potential tax credits, digital dollars or just another tool to reach their emission management goals. In fact Garland discusses their new Texas project, which have been historically problematic due to temperature issues of the south of the Mason Dixon line.
Spiess asks about the different shale plays and how their Bitcoin mining has fared in different geographical locations. From the Bakken in North Dakota to the desert of West Texas to the Rocky Mountain region to the Marcellus.
“We had an install in Pennsylvania and the gas was great and we loved it,” Garland said. “Unfortunately we had an operator with just a handful of wells so we moved them up to North Dakota, but I would definitely go back to the Marcellus.”
Garland also talks about the difference between the operators and the mineral owners, how exactly Great American Mining fits into the relationship.
“We are essentially or effectively where we pay them a fixed amount for that gas,” Garland said. “So in that situation the mineral owners are getting paid.”
The two also discuss the blockchain and what they next step in digital integration looks like for the oil and gas industry.
