Curtis Shuck, CEO and Chairman, Well Done Foundation (WDF), gives an update on their mission to plug as many orphaned and abandoned wells possible. Shuck shares some growing pains the non profit has gone through since 2019, and how those pains turned into positive growth.
Shuck talks about the $1.2T Infrastructure Package and how there are dollars earmarked for abandoned and orphaned wells. He also talks about the ESG (Environmental Social Governance) influence on capping wells across the country.
The interview dives into the educational and awareness element of the orphan and abandoned wells. Shuck explains how their educational curriculum is being introduced into school systems in Louisiana.
The WDF is sponsoring the first of its kind “Carbon Methodology” for orphaned and abandoned oil & gas well plugging with the American Carbon Registry (ACR) which will be a “game changing project finance tool” that will allow the WDF’s important work to scale up more quickly without burdening taxpayers with the expense and liability.
Beginning this past September, WDF began planning and plugging orphaned and abandoned wells in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and California.
Shuck said next year, in 2022, the WDF has approximately 250 abandoned and orphaned wells projected to be plugged. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates there are approximately 2.15 million unplugged abandoned wells scattered throughout the United States.
