Joe Sinnott, Witting Partners, joins The Crude Life for a podcast series within a podcast titled “Sustainable Leadership Series: Tommy Boy’s Velvet Glove”.
Host Jason Spiess and Sinnott discuss the traditional and new age definitions of a “Velvet Glove” leader. Traditional definition is an outwardly gentle or friendly manner used to disguise one’s firm or ruthless determination.
The new age definition is when a leader is in charge of an industry they’ve never worked in. Stereotypically speaking, the first generation carpenter starts his own construction company and does most of the work from the field to the office. The second generation helps the family business or has grown up at the workplace, goes to college and becomes a hybrid of experience and education. The third generation is primarily only university education. No real work experience, yet inserted into a leadership role.
Tommy Boy is one example of a Velvet Glove leader. Someone who’s hands haven’t pick up a hammer or shovel and have soft velvety hand, with no calluses.
The two discuss the leadership styles, behaviors and realities of working for an “out of touch” leader.
Why companies need to understand the need for Executive Awareness right now is also discussed. From the ESG to COVID to working from home, there is a new workplace and companies need to understand so they can be ready for 2022.
This is the third installment of the series, the previous themes were on “Why Narcissists Get Promoted Before You” and “Crab Bucket Cultures” in the workplace. The next installment is titled “Alcoholic Leadership & Culture”.
