Bakken, ND – The Bakken BBQ and The Crude Life are partnering up to raise awareness and money at western ND’s premiere BBQ, the 9th Annual Bakken BBQ being held June 18 in Dickinson, ND.
The Crude Life will be smoking potatoes at the Bakken BBQ this year as a symbolic way to offer even more inclusion, diversity and options.
“I think that small steps of inclusion and awareness are absolutely critical in energy today and you need to have it at every level,” The Crude Life’s Jason Spiess said. “Furthermore, you need to make sure actions of diversity are real and in this example the potato at a BBQ demonstrates that symbolic action.
Spiess, who is also the emcee of the Bakken BBQ, continues explaining in the symbolism of the smoked potatoes at the Bakken BBQ.
“And it’s not just showing up anymore, no we need to ensure that all voices are really heard, and that those voices matter,” Spiess added. “Because at the end of the day, different people have different lives, but everybody needs energy everyday. Everyday energy for everyday people.”
As a cancer survivor, Spiess has modified his diet, which includes much less meat than an average American.
“Potatoes are a great symbol of diversity because they can be baked, stuffed, mashed or even smoked. Potatoes are versatile, delicious, and nutritious,” Spiess said. “The potato is an great vegetarian option to put your BBQ on.”
The potatoes that will be used for the BBQ were grown on a farm outside of Dawson, ND, and will be cooked in a recycled and repurposed piece of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The Crude Life will also be working as an Environmental Energy Ambassador during the Bakken BBQ with The Bakken Bridge, an East/West energy awareness program. High school students from the Fargo Moorhead area will be attending the Bakken BBQ, handing out potatoes as well as learning first hand about the oil and gas industry and environmental energy.
“We are very excited to add the potatoes to this year’s event,” Bakken BBQ co-founders Jackie Jenkin and Tiffany Steiner said in a joint comment. “Every year we try to add new ideas and experiences to include as many people as possible. We are very excited about The Crude Life’s smoked potatoes.”
Last year, practicing safe and healthy guidelines, The 8th annual Bakken BBQ was able to raise $100,000 for Make-A-Wish North Dakota, $3,000 to the Dickinson BackPack Program, $1,000 to Women Empowering Women for elderly women and $1,000 to a local family.
In addition to The Crude Life’s Smoked Potatoes and regular offerings, The Bakken BBQ will honor and celebrate First Responders as part of the event.
A first responder is a person with specialized training who is among the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency, such as an accident, natural disaster, or terrorism. First responders typically include law enforcement officers, paramedics, EMT’s and firefighters.
The Bakken BBQ will be honoring their service all night on stage and at the event.
The 9th Annual Bakken BBQ is Friday June 18 at the West River Ice Center in Dickinson, ND. For more information email bakkenbbq@hotmail.com or studio@thecrudelife.com
