Bismarck, ND- The North Dakota Geological Survey, Paleontology department has announced the locations for their 2014 summer public fossil digs. More than five sites have been chosen across the state and each will highlight a different period in North Dakota’s geologic time.
The digs are scheduled throughout June, July and August and are open to anyone who may be up for a light adventure and to learn about prehistoric life by collecting fossils.
“What started in the year 2000 to help promote tourism in the state has really grown to an overall educational experience for people of all ages,” explains state Paleontologist Dr. John Hoganson. “People from 26 states and several foreign countries have attended, but so have curious North Dakotans.”
The ever-popular Pembina Gorge site is once again on the line up, and back for a second straight year are the Bismarck area dig sites. Cost, as well as participation limits varies depending on location. No experience is needed; however, some sites may require more physical endurance than others.
This year’s locations and dates are:
Pembina Gorge, June 23rd through June 29th
Whiskey Creek, July 14th through July 20th
Bismarck Area, July 22nd through July 24th
Marmarth, July 26th through August 2nd
Medora, August 11th through August 17th
